For reasons, I am getting broadcast cable from Comcast, and I want to use a Cablecard.
I hate the ugly boxes.
While shopping, I can't find TVs listing if they have cablecard slots.
For a while you could get away with a CableCard if you were willing to sacrifice VOD, but now they're doing switched digital video to save bandwidth, some channels are only sent when someone is actually watching that channel, unlike a few years ago when every channel had to be on the cable plant at all times.
A CableCard doesn't have the capability to transmit, at all, so it's simply incompatible.
The two-way successor to CableCard was called Tru2Way, and a few Panasonic TVs were sold that were compatible.
There's some even newer successor to Tru2Way that's been announced, but it's not available yet, and, given the history, I wouldn't hold my breath.
I would love to just be able to use my TV and its features.
I hate having to juggle remotes, boxes and IR blasters.
Encrypt the signal to my house.
Put a decryptor box at the home, so I can just cleanly have my TVs.
But then, no more rental fees from Comcast for their ugly enormous boxes.
Put a decryptor box at the home, so I can just cleanly have my TVs.
They also want to make sure you cannot digitally record the signal, so the encryption has to go all the way.
With a cable box, they can use HDCP.
It's also impractical because they'd require an expensive RF modulator that outputs many channels.
My 1 bedroom has nothing visible but the TV.
I suppose I could just velco it to the back.
I think from what I've read in this thread you should be fine with most modern TV's.
Especially if they are labeled as being digital TV ready.
Though I am having trouble understand the issue, my uverse stb is rather small and the remote controls the TV too, is it different for Comcast?
article source am not slot card tv pret to upgrade my HTPC at the moment.
When time and money are more flexible, I'll go that route.
There might be a few markets left with analog still on the plant, but they're going to be rare if they exist at all.
They are all in major cities though.
I know I do, and I get TV without a box.
I pay the bill every month and TV is added on it for a pitiful sum.
They don't tell you that you can do this, I asked them for it.
They tried to send me a converter box twice after I asked them not to, so I refused delivery.
If you want the more premium packages which include dvr service you'd need the box.
The only limitations you may have are not having the on screen guide that's part of the stb software.
When I had just Comcast internet the tv would still get random channels from the wall and Comcast is digital in my area.
My recommendation is to call and decline a stb and see if it works, if it doesn't I guess you're Sol.
I would ask about getting the smallest stb you can get and if there's a way to waive the rental fee.
And have gone through the 880s.
But its the principal of the matter.
A simple experience of watching TV shouldn't be tougher than invading a small country.
And this is a temporary thing.
But I like an elegant solution.
A TV, with no other needed boxes, inputs, power draws, etc.
And for cable free, that's awesome.
You still need a STB though for cable.
Most listings out there for them anymore are out of stock.
Try looking for the term "Digital Cable Ready", which is the new name for CableCARD, it seems.
There used to be a few dozen channels in clearQAM, and now there is nothing.
My current provider has several ClearQAM channels, but Comcast and other cable companies got the green light to encrypt everything and they're starting to do so.
If you have the time to weed through the non-related crap, an Amazon search for "Digital Cable Ready" in their Television section will get you a half dozen options or so.
The big reason for CableCards is for the 3rd party cableboxes, like TiVo.
Also, it is a misnomer that CableCards are 1-way.
The TiVo and many other modern CableCard ready devices are 2-way capable, it just depends on the provider if they support it.
The only real reason to have 2-way communication is for PPV and OnDemand, something that is becoming less and less useful as TVs become smarter and able to utilize DVR, Hulu, and Netflix, as well as services from content providers.
Cablecard supports this, but most Tivos do not unless you buy an adapter.
The incompetent techs at my former cable company called this a tuner box, but it's really just a cable modem that connects to the Tivo by usb.
Better yet, it took them two separate visits to figure out that the Tivo even needed one.
However, Switched digital Video, isn't that prevalent yet.
There is a new CableCard-esque standard for 3rd party devices so you don't need the adapter, but the card nor the devices area available yet.
All a cableCARD does is allow the TV to be it's own set top box.
You can also use these with 3rd party boxes, like TiVo, so allow that box to directly access channels without having to have two boxes set up in series and the TiVo not have any control over channel selection.
Or if they decide to encrypt everything, you will get nothing at all.
I'm currenly watching chan.
I can tune anything on the line up.
It is, of course, how the system was intended to work, but there are no legal regulations enforcing it.
And every Comcast customer has to have a box to get any cable at all.
It accepts a CableCard and offers 3 tuners accessible over the network, which send out the decoded MPEG2 stream via UDP.
If the channel isn't flagged copy-once, it'll work with any player, including VLC.
If it is, you'll need a player that's capable of dealing with that, such as the Playstation 3.
A recent firmware more info enables DLNA, so I can open up the PS3 and watch any channel I'd like, in real time.
I havent seen a tv with a cable card in well over a decade.
Comcast may be a bunch of fucktards though.
The unencrypted stuff is usually called ClearQAM.
The number of providers using ClearQAM is dropping, the encrypted stuff needs either a Cablecard or set top box which contains a cablecard.
Think of it as a per-tv tax on your cable bill.
For those really unlucky people there's also switched digital video, a number of otherwise normal channels are treated as on-demand and aren't available on the cable until the set top box or tuning adapter if you happen to be using a DVR requests them.
Im well aware of all of this.
I still ahven't seen a tv with cable card in it in decades.

Да, бывает же...
